French and Spanish Education (7-12) B.S.
Students progress through communicative to more content-oriented coursework. A foundation in linguistics promotes higher levels of proficiency attainment and enriches pedagogical preparation. Civilization and literature coursework in the targeted language offer opportunities to expand cross-cultural literacies as well as opportunities to progress toward the targeted American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Advanced-Low level of proficiency.

Master of Science in Education, French and Spanish Education (1-6 Extension)
Designed with initially licensed teachers in mind, this master’s track is uniquely suited to the needs of beginning French and Spanish teachers. Coursework combines deeper exploration of foreign language pedagogy centered on practical questions that arise in classroom teaching experiences with further development of proficiency and literacy in French or Spanish. The course of study is designed to satisfy New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements for professional licensure: a master’s in a related field and 12 graduate-level credit hours in the language specialization. A ‘Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools’ course extends licensure to include grades 1-6.
"I have been a Spanish teacher at Lancaster High School for 20 years and I have had the pleasure of working with student teachers from Buffalo State for most of my career. It has been a very fulfilling experience because they are always very well prepared and eager to learn. They are also trained to use the target language as much as possible in the classroom which is a top priority for me. I always feel very comfortable handing my classes over to my these student teachers. They have always done an outstanding job."

"I am a career French teacher. My two best student teachers ever came from Buffalo State. I myself received my degree there, and am grateful for how well-prepared I was to enter a foreign language classroom and succeed. In my opinion, Buffalo State is the best!"
